How to run FollowMee GPS Tracker in an iOS device?

When you first run the app, you are required to create an account with us if you don't already have one. Pressing the Start button on the app main screen will lead to a link to the registration page. Enter your User Name, Password, Email for your registration. After registration, you need to return to the app and enter your User Name and Password. Select an option from What Are You Tracking (This will initially set the Power Saving Mode). Press the Continue button and the app begins to track.

The iPhone will prompt up a dialog box to request permission to use the location service. Make sure press Yes. Otherwise, the app will not be able to perform.

The most frequent errors you might encounter include:

- This User Name does not exists. You have used an User Name that you have not registered with us. To solve this problem, simply go to the Settings screen and following the registration link to register your account.
- Either User Name or Password is not correct. To solve this problem, simply go to the Settings screen to re-type the correct credential.
- Location service is denied for this application. Following this link for resolution.
- For other problems, please go to FAQ page.

To customize settings, press the Action icon on the bottom of the app screen and select Settings. Explanation for each setting as follows:

User Name
User Name that is registered with FollowMee.com. If you want to track multiple devices under the same acount, use the user name and password for this account

Password
Password that is registered with FollowMee.com

Lock Screen
Enabling this setting locks the screen with your account password. FollowMee is protected from being stopped or viewed by other people, or by the thief who just stole your iPhone. The account password is needed to unlock the screen. If you forget the password, there is no way to unlock it. Changing your password on our web site won't work.

Track Interval
Interval in which GPS will be turned on to track location. Paid app users can select from 1 minute to 12 hours while free app users can select from 30 minutes to 12 hours. Lower value in interval drains more battery. Extreme low interval (1 to 5 minutes) drains much more battery. It is recommended to use this extreme low interval for a short time, or set up a track schedule to minimize its use.

Track Schedule
Enable schedule to control when to start and stop tracking. Weekday and weekend schedules are provided. To set all day tracking, use 12:00 AM for start time and 11:59 PM for end time. To disable tracking, use 12:00 AM for start time and 12:00 AM for end time.

Primary Usage (Deluxe Edition Only)
  • Vehicle tracking device - This setting turns your phone to a dedicated vehicle tracker. FollowMee tracks only when the vehicle is driven (or the phone is charged). Otherwise, FollowMee is in standby mode to conserve battery. To do it, simply place your phone in the vehicle and keep it plugged-in to the car power outlet. For more details, visit FAQ - What is Vehicle Tracking Device.
  • Tracking cell phone - this setting turns your phone back to a cell phone which FollowMee tracks all the time, regardless whether the phone is charged or not. Configure Power Saving Mode to optimize battery usage if this setting is selected.

Port
Port number that FollowMee uses to upload location data to FollowMee server.

GPS Power
GPS power level to use to track location. Apple recommends using medium level. The higher level will in theory provide better accuracy but definitely drains more battery.

GPS Timeout
The maximum time (in seconds) that GPS is turned on to search satellites. As soon as satellites are located, GPS is turned off and location is recorded. If this length of time has passed and satellites cannot be located, GPS is turned off and no location is recorded. The bigger value for this setting, the more likely location can be found. But it will drain more battery.

Power Saving Mode
The tracker app relies on GPS for positioning and GPS consumes a lot of battery power. Power Saving Mode is a setting to minimize GPS usage and therefore save battery power. When track interval is due, the app uses cell tower switch to detect if the device is still at the same place. If there is NO cell tower switch, the previously obtained location is considered current location and the app will not turn on GPS. If there is cell tower switch, the app will turn on GPS for a more accurate location scan.
  • High setting (app default value) ensures the most power saving. It does not turn on GPS until there are two or more cell tower switches. This setting is perfect for driving great distance (5 miles or more). While High setting conserves battery, it migth be less sensitive to detect new location. If you find out that FollowMee often fails to track new locations, you should adjust this setting lower.
  • Medium setting has modest power saving. It does not turn on GPS until there is one cell tower switch. This setting is good for driving moderate distance (5 miles or less)
  • Low setting always turns on GPS at track interval. Because it does not minimize GPS use, you should increase track interval or decrease GPS timeout to conserve battery. This setting is good for tracking small distance, like hiking, running, or cycling
  • None setting is similar to Low setting. All location, either same location or new location, is obtained and uploaded
Load Server Setting Package (Deluxe Edition Only)
If you install the app to a lot of devices (more than 10), setting up the app in each device will be time-consuming. You can contact us to set up a pre-configured setting package. As the setting package is ready in the server, we will send you a token code. Pressing this button and enter the correct token will download the setting into the device. This process will save you from manually entering user name, password, and other setting to the app

SOS Panic Button
The SOS Panic Button allows you to quickly call your specified telephone number, and to send out your current location by email during emergency. When enabled, this button will appear on the app screen, or the unlock screen if Lock Screen is enabled. When this button is touched, the following actions are taken place:

- Email is sent if Email Address field is not blank
- Phone number is called if Emergency Telephone is not blank. The call is made through the built-in dialer or VOIP if cellular service is not available
- If tracking is in stopped state, tracking will be started
- The app is put in SOS mode.

In the SOS mode, the app is optimized for more location update. For example, Track Schedule will be disabled and Track Interval will be set to 10 minutes if it was set to more than 10 minutes (for paid app users).

To reset SOS mode, you need to hold down the SOS button for 2 seconds. In additions, the SOS mode can be reset when you touch the Stop button to stop tracking. After the SOS mode is reset, the tracking is restored to its original state. If tracking is stopped before the SOS mode, tracking will be stopped after the reset.

Emergency Telephone
The telephone number to call when the SOS Panic Button is touched. If this field is blank, the app will not make any telephone call.

Email Address
The email address to send out the current location when the SOS Panic Button is touched. If this field is blank, the app will not send out any email.

Email Includes
The type of location that the email sends out. The default is current location. The email body includes an URL that reflects the real-time dynamic location. That means when the device location changes, the map that the URL points will reflect the change. Therefore, there is no need to send a second email.

This URL is in fact the shared current location URL. It shows the GPS location as well as the network location. It remains active until you remove it. To protect your privacy, it is recommended that you remove it when the emergency situation is over. You can remove it in the Account page.

Your Name / ID
This value will be sent out in the email body so that the recipient can identify you.

Enable VOIP
For iPad or iPod Touch, you can enable VOIP (Voice Over IP) so that the emergency call can be made through VOIP. A SIP account is required for this function. Not all sip providers work. Please try it before pay for an account. We recommend these providers

SIP Domain
Registrar of your SIP provider. Example: sip.freecall.com

SIP User Name
User name of your SIP account with your provider

SIP Password
Password of your SIP account with your provider

Country Code
Country code of your emergency telephone number

SIP Domain
Registrar of your SIP provider. Example: sip.freecall.com

SIP User Name
User name of your SIP account with your provider

SIP Password
Password of your SIP account with your provider

Country Code
Country code of your notifiy telephone number

After the settings are set, press the Continue button. The app will verify your login with the server. The iPhone will also prompt up a dialog box to request permission to use the location service. Make sure to select yes. Otherwise, the app will not be able to perform. After that, the panic button is ready. You can open the app and press the button when you need assistance.

When the button is pressed, the app enters into panicking mode. Under panicking mode, the following actions are performed:

- GPS tracker starts to monitor your location (GPS or network) every 10 minutes and upload to the server.
- A notification email is sent to your configured email list. The email includes an URL that points to your current location and your past location since pressing the button. The current location that the URL references to is a dynamic location, instead of static location. This means that if you moves, this URL follows to your new location. Therefore, you don't to send out another notification email if your location changes.
- A phone call is made to your configured phone number. If you are using iPad or iPod Touch and you have set up VOIP settings, the phone call is made through VOIP.

When you are waiting for assistance, you should keep your phone on and this allows the app to update your location. You can minimize the app since it will continue to run in the background. You can press the panic button again. This will force the app to update your location to the server immediately (instead of on the next 10-minutes interval). The app will also send another notification email and make another notification phone call,

Your notified person can click on the URL to view your current and past location. If this person has your account information, he can login to the map page of web site to view the map of your location. This page provides tools to customize the map. He can view the current map, past x hours map, or map of a specific date. Location data can be downloaded.

When your assistance comes, you can reset the panicking mode by holding down the button for 2 seconds. The GPS tracker stops and it no longer monitors your location. As the GPS Tracker stops, the location URL is still valid and only points to your location before the GPS Tracker stops. The URL is valid for one week and will be removed automatically one week after its creation. If you concern your privacy and want to remove it earlier, you can do so in your account page of the web site.Just look for the label "You are sharing the following current locations" in the account page.

Check Software Update Before Reboot
Enable this setting to check and install FollowMee software update before phone reboots. Prepaid users take note. Not all prepaid carriers have the data capability to download binary files (like T-Mobile prepaid). If they do, this function incurs data charge. For example, the downloaded binary file size is around 100K. That would be around $1.00 for AT&T GoPhone. Check with your prepaid carrier for details.

Note: to allow this function to work, default permissions should not be more restricted than this app's permissions. To set the proper default permissions, go to Option - Advanced - Applications, then select FollowMee and click Menu - Edit Permissions. On the Permissions: FollowMee screen, click Menu - Set as Defaults. This will copy FollowMee's permissions to default permissions. Or, to make things simple, you can just allow all in "Edit Default Permissions" in Option - Advanced - Applications.

Enable Call-In
Enable the phone to auto answer phone calls from a list of telephone numbers. This function allow you to remote listen (bug listen) the surrounding conversation. This works only when the app is in tracking state. This setting is intended for a vehicle tracking device. NOTE: to allow this function to work, you should not lock the phone screen, set password to your phone, nor put the phone in a holster.

Call-In Number List

How to set up a WiFi-Only vehicle tracking device?

A WiFi-Only tracker uses only WiFi to access to the internet. It does not have cellular service because the device does not have cellular chip, like the Wifi only iPad, or other Wifi only Android tablets. Even the device does has celluar capability, sometimes you might not subscribe to cellular service for cost purpose. But you can still run FollowMee in these types of devices. When running in WiFi-Only mode, the tracker loses the real-time capability. Location is recorded per the configured interval and saved to the device memory. Location can only be uploaded when WiFi connection is established. Therefore, with this type of tracker, please expect significant delay in location update. Set up a WiFi-Only vehicle tracking device is almost the same as setting up a regular vehicle tracking device except for the following points:
  • WiFi needs to be turned on at all time.
  • When you first start the app, it requires WiFi connection to check in with the server.
  • You should at least create a profile in the device to connect to your home WiFi network. When your car gets home, the device can automatically connects to your home network and uploads all the location that the tracker has recorded throughout the day.
  • You can optionally set up your device to connect to any open WiFi hot spot so that the app can upload as often as it can connect to a hot spot.
  • Without a constant internet connection, the app might error out from time to time. You can safely ignore these errors.
