Q: How this GPS tracker app works? [scroll to top]

A: The purpose of this GPS tracker app is to record locations of your phone and upload to this web site. Once you have registered an account and entered the credentials to the app, the app will be running quietly in the background. There will be no user interaction involved. As location is recorded, it is uploaded to this web site. You can view the locations on your map. You can view the current location as well as location history.

Therefore, if your kids or your other family members carry a smartphone, you can monitor their location by installing this GPS tracker app to their phones. Business users can use this GPS tracker app to monitor the whereabouts of the employees.

Q: Does my phone need cellular service to run this GPS tracker app? [scroll to top]

A: No, you don't have to. If your phone has WiFi and you don't need the real time upload of your location. You can run this GPS tracker app as WiFi-Only mode. In this mode, this GPS tracker app records location per your configured interval and saves them in the phone memory. When the phone has a WiFi connection, it then uploads the data to the server. Running the WiFi-Only tracker is no different from running the regular tracker. Just note that when you first start this GPS tracker app, you need to turn on WiFi so that the app can check in to the server. After that, WiFi connection is not required for the app to run (but does needs WiFi connection to upload data). A full-time Vehicle Tracking Device can run in WiFi-Only mode. For details, see how to set up a WiFi-Only Vehicle Tracking Device.

Please note that the WiFi-Only mode does not work well with Windows Phone 8 or Windows 8 RT devices. The Windows platform has a limitation (in additions to this other limitation). This GPS tracker app cannot wake up periodically to report location if the device is not connected. In other words, there is no tracking when the device is not connected.

If you need to monitor location real time, then cellular service is required. Cellular service enables this GPS tracker app to upload location as soon as it is recorded.

Q: Does this GPS tracker app work in a tablet? [scroll to top]

A: Yes, this GPS tracker app works in iPad, or an Android tablet. Some tablets, like iPad WiFi, don't have built-in GPS chip. In this case, only network location is recorded. If the tablet has cellular service, the app will run just like in a regular smart phone. If the tablet has only WiFi but no cellular service, the app will run in WiFi-Only mode.

Q: How to view the location? [scroll to top]

A: Current and past location can be viewed in a desktop browser or a mobile browser through this web site (http://www.FollowMee.com). Login to your map page. If you have more than one devices in your account, select a device. The map shows the current location. To view location history, you can select the Current Location control under the map and select one of the history type. In mobile site, you need to click the Option button on the top to access the Current Location control.

Q: Why this GPS tracker app cannot login to the server? [scroll to top]

A: You receive login error message when you press the Start button in the FollowMee GPS tracker app. First make sure that you have registered an account with us. Then make sure that your user name and password are entered correctly. Occasionally, the login process fails because it cannot connect to the server. In this case, you just need to try again later.

Q: Can I track multiple devices with one account? [scroll to top]

A: Yes. You can track multiple devices (even from different platforms) with your account. When you set up the FollowMee GPS tracker app in these devices, use your existing account user name and password. When you view the map page, you will see your all your devices on the same map. You can select one device and view its location history. If you want to change the device name, see the next FAQ.

Q: How do I change the device name as appeared on the map page? [scroll to top]

A: You can rename your device in your account page of the full web site (not available in the mobile site). Click the "change" link next to your device name. Sometimes, the default device name is not descriptive. For example, most iPhones are labeled as "iPhone" and you have trouble distinguishing them. This gets worse when you have multiple iPhones in your account. To solve this problem, you can change the name in the iPhone (Settings -> General -> About -> Name). Then open the app and press the stop button. Wait 5 seconds and press the start button. This will force the name update on the web site. But this process only works if you have not used the "change" link to rename your device. If you have already done so, the server has flagged this name and does not allow this process to overwrite your name. If you want to use this process to update the name, you need to contact us to reset this flag.

Q: What is a Vehicle Tracking Device? [scroll to top]

A: Vehicle Tracking Device is a feature for the GPS tracker app. When enabled, it turns your phone to a dedicated vehicle tracker. The GPS tracker app tracks only when the vehicle is driven. When the car is parked, the GPS tracker falls into standby mode. In this way, you won't miss a single location when the car is moving. And you won't waste the phone battery when the car is stopped. To do it, you need a phone and a car charger. Install the GPS tracker app to the phone and place the phone in the vehicle. Keep the phone plugged-in to the car power outlet. When the set up is done, you leave the phone in the car with the charger attached. When the car is started and driven, the charger powers the phone and the GPS tracker app wakes up to start tracking the car location*. The battery is also being charged to keep the battery level full. When the car is stopped and parked, the charger stops powering the phone. The GPS tracker app enters into standby mode and tracking is stopped. In this standby mode, battery usage is kept to its minimal. It remains in standby until the car is driven again.

Please note that for some vehicles, the power outlet remains powered even when the vehicle is parked. In this case, this GPS tracker app will remain tracking.

Currently, this feature is available in iOS, Android and Blackberry (Classic Blackberry and not Blackberry 10 devices). It is available only in the Deluxe Edition.

* The app in iOS devices cannot wake up immediately. It will wake up several minutes later and sometimes the delay would be up to ten minutes.

Q: What is Power Saving Mode? [scroll to top]

A: The GPS tracker app relies on GPS for positioning and GPS consumes a lot of battery power. Power Saving Mode is a setting to minimize GPS usage and therefore save battery power. When track interval is due, this GPS tracker app uses cell tower switch to detect if the device is still at the same place. If there is NO cell tower switch, the previously obtained location is considered current location and the app will not turn on GPS. If there is cell tower switch, the app will turn on GPS for a more accurate location scan.
  • High setting (app default value) ensures the most power saving. It does not turn on GPS until there are two or more cell tower switches. This setting is perfect for driving great distance (5 miles or more). While High setting conserves battery, it might be less sensitive to detect new location. If you find out that FollowMee often fails to track new locations, you should adjust this setting lower.
  • Medium setting has modest power saving. It does not turn on GPS until there is one cell tower switch. This setting is good for driving moderate distance (5 miles or less)
  • Low setting always turns on GPS at track interval. Because it does not minimize GPS use, you should increase track interval or decrease GPS timeout to conserve battery. This setting is good for tracking small distance, like hiking, running, or cycling

Q: What should I do if the map page does not show up-to-date location? [scroll to top]

A: See trouble shooting for the GPS tracker app.

Q: I replace my device. How can I transfer the license to my new device? [scroll to top]

A: If you purchase this GPS tracker app for your iOS device in Apple app store, Apple allows you to download the same app to your new iOS device for free. If you purchase the license in our web site, or through in-app purchase inside the app, you can follow the following procedure to transfer the license.

1. Install the free/trial GPS tracker app in your new device.
2. Uninstall the GPS tracker app in your old device.
3. Remove your old device in your account page. Note that the remove function is not available in the mobile web site.
4. Click the "License Code" link in the top of the account page, and copy the license code.
5. Click the "Account" link and then click "Buy Now" button corresponding to your new device.
6. On the next page, select the edition and paste your license code to the text box. Click "Use Code" button.
7. Go back to your account page to verify that your new device is in the correct edition.

Please note that deluxe license is transferable across different platform while standard license is only transferable within the same platform. Each license can only be transferred three times at most. If you want to transfer premium service (including extended history) to other device, please contact us.

Q: Can I use this tracker app to record my state residency status? [scroll to top]

A: This web server only keeps 7-day history for a paid app. To record state residency status, you need to sign up for the following premium services: You can sign up for all these premium services here. Once it is done, you can download your reports in your map page (full website). You can download the detailed location report with physical address, or the summarized state residency report listing number of days in each state. Note that signing up the 2-year extended history service does not mean the full 2-year history is available immediately. The 2-year history will take 2 years to build up.

Q: Is the FollowMee account free? [scroll to top]

A: Yes, the FollowMee account is free. You can run the free tracker app and use this service for free. For comparison of different editions, see this edition comparison page.

Q: How to delete my account? [scroll to top]

A: Uninstall the tracker app from your device. Login to your account page and delete any devices from this page. If you subscribed any monthly or annual subscription, you need to cancel it in your Paypal account. Your location data will be deleted in 7 days. Account without activity will be deleted automatically after 6 months.

Q: What is a delegate account? [scroll to top]

A: By adding other FollowMee account as your delegating account, you allow this account holder to view your device location without having to expose your account credential. This is different from location sharing, where all internet users can view your shared location. Only the delegating account that you have added can view your location. You can add or remove delegating account in you account page.

Business users can delegate the main account to a view-only account, where this account holder can only view location, but cannot set up app, or modify information of the main account. In other use case, You have several accounts to track different groups of devices and you want an admin account that can view location of all these devices. The solution is that you add this admin account to the delegating account in each of the group accounts. When the admin user signs in, he can view devices of each delegated account.

Even though delegate account enables location sharing with limited users, you should use the same account if you have multiple devices to track.

Q: How can I stop the users from accessing the map without sign in? [scroll to top]

A: The GPS tracker app has a direct link to the online map page, which usually requires a login. The newer version (v4.0 for iOS and Android, v1.9 for Windows) signs you in to the map page automatically. This is convenient for most users while you might not want this function. You can stop this behavior in your account page. Look for the option "allow accessing online map from tracker app".

Q: Can I use this GPS tracker app for business use? [scroll to top]

A: Yes, you can use this GPS tracker app and service provided in this web site for your business. But we ask that you purchase the Deluxe Edition for each device. You can monitor all your devices in one account. If you need volume license, visit the app page. For other questions, please feel free to contact us.

Q: How do I start to use this GPS tracker app for business? [scroll to top]

A: This is the steps for using the GPS tracker for your business.

1. If you don't have FollowMee account, register your account in the login page.
2. Install the free/trial GPS tracker app to your target devices. You can download the app in the app page.
3. Set up the app with your FollowMee account. You can use one account for multiple devices.
4. If you need your users to install the app themselves and you don't want to disclose your account info, use a login token.
5. Adjust additional app settings, like track interval, forced update interval etc.
6. Once the app is running in your target devices, you can monitor them in you map page.
7. Purchase the license in your account page. If you need volume license, visit the app page.
8. If needed, subscribe to these premium services, or the longer history retention.

Q: What is login token? Can I have my users to install and set up this GPS tracker app with my FollowMee account, without knowing my account password? [scroll to top]

A: To set up the GPS tracker app, it requires your account user name and password. If you need your users to install and set up the GPS tracker app in their devices and you cannot disclose your account info, the Login Token is your solution. This is a 12-character long string that linked to your account info. When your users enter it to the GPS tracker app setting, it sets up the app with your account user name and password. In this way, your users can set up the GPS tracker app without knowing your account password.

Login token can be entered in the app settings. Open the tracker app and open the settings screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and select Login Token.

Please note that your users can access the online map through the tracker app without login. You can disable this option in your account page. See this FAQ for more information. Login Token is not available to the GPS tracker app for Blackberry (both classic and Blackberry 10).

Q: What premium services do you provide? [scroll to top]

A: Currently the following premium services are provided. These are paid subscription and you can request a free trial in your account page.
  • Remote Control - With Remote Control, you can stop/restart your tracker app in this web site. You can also change app settings remotely. You no longer need to access the physical device for this purpose. Select your settings and push them to your device. This service is available only in iOS and Android.
  • Web Service API - Web Service API feeds location data to your own application or web page. It returns data in JSON or KML format. The API functions include current location, location history for your devices. With this API service, it is possible to share location of multiple devices, or embed map of your live location in your web site.
  • Convert Coordinates to Address - Subscribe to this service if you want to include physical address in the data download. The reverse geocoding provider is OpenStreetMap and the address might not include street number.
  • Auto Refresh Map - this service allows the map page to auto refresh current location of your target devices. You just set an interval and watch the map refresh itself automatically. Better yet, you can auto refresh the all-device view if you subscribe this service on account level.
  • Email Report - We will send you the raw location data (csv format) daily or weekly. This service will release yourself from downloading the data manually. Specify your email address and report frequency on the next screen. For daily report, previous day's data is emailed to you at 6:00 am (your local time) everyday. For weekly report, previous week's data (Sunday through Saturday) is emailed at 6:00 am every Sunday. If you need custom report, contact us and we can set it up for a small one-time fee
  • No Update Notification - If you cannot afford any missing location data, you should sign up for this service. When the GPS tracker stops updating location for over 24 hours, we will notify you by email. There are a lot of reasons that the GPS tracker app might stops working. The users have uninstalled the app; the users have disabled the device location service; or the app malfunctions. When the app has stopped for 24 hours, we will email you.
  • KML Overlay - This allows you to overlay your custom KML layer to the breadcrumbs in the map page. It visually integrates your actual breadcrumbs with your planned route, or other layout of interest. The overlay function accepts an URL for a KML or KMZ file. You need to host your KML/KMZ file in the cloud, or other network accessible location.
  • Download All Device Data - This allows you to download data for all devices in your account at one time. Just click the all device view and click the download button to download all your data. This service saves your time if you have a lot of devices. Without this service, you can only download data one device at a time.
  • Extended History - This web site offers 7-day history for your location data. For longer history, you can subscribe to Extended History. We offer various plans ranged from 45-day to 3-year.

Q: How does FollowMee protect my location data? [scroll to top]

A: In your cell phone, your location data is encrypted when saving and uploading to the FollowMee server. When your cell phone has new location, it is encrypted when cached in the cell phone while waiting for uploading. It remains encrypted during the uploading process. Your data will never leave your cell phone in the clear format. Therefore your data is protected from man-in-middle attack.

Your password is protected in your cell phone. The clear password in the setting file is encrypted as soon as you start the FollowMee service. Your password is also protected in our servers. Before they are stored in our database in an encrypted format. Therefore your data is protected from identity theft.

Q: How does FollowMee protect my privacy? [scroll to top]

A: Your account information and location data are stored in our servers securely. We don't share your information with any other 3rd parties. All out-of-date location data are deleted permanently. The access to your location data is protected by an authentication process. Only you can view your location data. Your location is not shared in the internet. Other users cannot access your location data without your user name/password unless you have used the Share My Location function.

Q: My location data is protected by my credential. How can I share my current location or past tracks? [scroll to top]

A: Your uploaded location data is protected by your credential, meaning that only you who know the User Name and Password can view your location. However, you can allow another FollowMee user to access to your location by using a delegate account. Or you can publish your location by generating a public URL. Other internet users can navigate to this URL to access your location without logging in. Finally you can embed this shared map in your own web site. You can publish the following 2 types of locations:
  • Dynamic Current Location (live) - The location referenced by this URL is a live location. Be aware that your privacy might be at risk for this type of sharing.
  • Static Past Tracks - The location referenced by this URL is a static past tracks.
To share your location, simply go to the map page (not available in mobile site) and click on the Share My Location button. Follow the steps on the page to generate the public URL and the embedded map. Later, you can view or remove your shared location in the Account page (not available in mobile site).

You can adjust the zoom level in your public URL if the shared map opens with a undesired zoom. Simply append "&z=YOUR_NUMBER" (without the quote) to the end of the public URL. Zoom level is between 0 (the lowest zoom level, in which the entire world can be seen on one map) to 21+ (down to individual buildings). If you want to change the zoom level of your embedded map, see the following FAQ.

Q: How can I embed the map of my shared location to my web site? [scroll to top]

A: Regular users can only embed static location. Before you can embed your map, you need to have shared location. Please go over the previous topic on how to share your location.

Go to the Account page (not available in mobile site). In the sharing static past tracks table, click on "Details" in the Shared Location column. Follow the instruction to embed the map.

If you are Web Service API subscriber, you can embed both dynamic (live) location. You can access the Share My Location button in the map page (not available in mobile site) and the account page (not available in mobile site). Then follow the instruction to embed the map.

While regular user can only share location of one device, Web Service API subscriber can share location of multiple devices. You can select one or more covered devices. If you subscribe the API on an account level, you can share location of all devices from your account.

Q: I use my API key to share my location. Can I regenerate the API key? [scroll to top]

A: Yes, you can regenerate your API key in your subscribed premium service page. When this is done, your existing API key becomes invalid and a new API key is generated. Any public URL or embedded map that uses your old API key will stop working immediately. Regenerate your key immediately if your API key has been compromised.

Q: Why I have this error message: Location service is denied for this application? [scroll to top]

A: When FollowMee is first started, the iPhone prompts you for permission of using location service for the GPS tracker app. You should grant the permission, FollowMee relies on iPhone's location service for location tracking. If you don't grant permission, FollowMee will not be able to run normally. To grant permission, you can go to Home -> Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services. There, you can enable location service for FollowMee.

Q: How can I make the app invisible? [scroll to top]

A: Currently, there is no way to hide this GPS tracker app icon on the iPhone screen. But there are ways to make it less noticeable. One way is to move the icon in a folder. Follow these steps:

1. Touch and hold the icon until all the icons begin to wiggle.
2. Drag the icon into a second icon.
3. The iPhone creates the folder and 2 icons inside.
4. Press the Home button to save the changes.

In additions, you can hide the app icon in the app switcher. If you force terminate the GPS tracker app (double click the home button and slide up the app), the GPS tracker app will automatically restart itself after the tracked device has a significant location change. For more details, see Q: Will the GPS tracker app restart itself if it is terminated by a user? When this happens, the GPS tracker app icon does not show up in the app switcher. This creates an illusion that this GPS tracker app is not running

Q: Will the GPS tracker app restart itself if it is terminated by a user? [scroll to top]

A: Yes. If a user kills the GPS tracker app in an iOS device (double click the home button and slide up the GPS tracker app), the app will restart itself after the tracked device has cellular tower change. This process might take several minutes if the device is moving and more likely to link to a different cell tower along the way. The restart process might take hours or longer if the device is stationary. This function is available in iOS version 5, 6, 7.1, and 8 while it is not available in iOS version 7.0.

Q: Does this GPS tracker app continue to run if Background App Refresh is disabled? [scroll to top]

A: Yes. However, you should have this setting enabled to ensure reliable tracking. To enable this setting, go to Home -> Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. Please note that in iOS 8, this tracker app is not in the background app list. In this case, you just need to turn on Background App Refresh.

When Background App Refresh is disabled, this GPS tracker app is running under the following limitations:
  • The app cannot restart itself if it is forced terminated
  • The app cannot run with track interval less than 10 minutes
  • The app will have much less time to obtain GPS fix, resulting in less accurate location
  • When the device restarts, the app does not restart itself until user unlocks the device screen. If you have this setting enabled, the app can restart itself even before user unlocks the device screen (after a cell tower switch precisely)

Q: Does this GPS tracker app continue to run if the device is disabled? [scroll to top]

A: Yes, this GPS tracker app is designed to run when the device is disabled. If a user (or a thief) tries to unlock the device for too many times, the device is disabled. this GPS tracker app continues to track. If the device is powered off and then powered on, the app can continue to track without the screen being unlocked (Background App Refresh need to be enabled for this feature. See previous FAQ). This design is ideal for recovering your device if it is stolen or lost.

Q: I sent the on-demand update request. Why does this GPS tracker app does not update the map? [scroll to top]

A: On the map page, you can send a on-demand request to the remote GPS tracker app to force a location update. However, this function does not work 100%, especially under the following situations:
  • If this GPS tracker app is forced terminated by a user, it can restart itself and continue tracking. But force update request does not work. You need to reboot the device to make it work. After rebooting, this GPS tracker app will restart itself. Force update request will resume working.
  • Background App Refresh is disabled for this GPS tracker app in the device settings.
  • This GPS tracker app has been stopped by pressing the stop button.
  • Low Power Mode (Settings -> Battery) is enabled in iOS 9 devices.
  • For iOS 7/8 devices, notification is disabled for this GPS tracker app in the device settings.
  • For iOS 7 devices, force terminating this GPS tracker app will make on-demand update request non-workable, regardless if the devices are rebooted or not.

Q: How do I configure this tracker app in my iOS devices through MDM? [scroll to top]

A: You can use MDM to deploy the app. You can use MDM to configure the tracker app. The end users just open the app and it is ready to track. You need a file ManagedAppConfig.plist as follows. You load this plist to your MDM server and it will be pushed to all your managed devices.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>login_token</key>
<string>xxxxxxxx</string>
</dict>
</plist>

You can generate your login token in your account page. If you need additional customized settings, you can contact us and we can put them in your login token.

Q: When I install the Android GPS tracker app, why it asks numerous permission requests? [scroll to top]

A: The main function of this GPS tracker app is to record device location and upload to this web site. This app does request numerous permissions and the following lists the details.
DescriptionPurpose
Read your contacts This is to get the device owner's name in order to populate the device name in your account page. The device name is a user friendly way to identify each of your devices in your account. No other contact data is read by this app. (READ_CONTACTS)

Q: I have enabled stealth mode for the Android GPS tracker app but it still shows up in my installed app list of Google Play? [scroll to top]

A: For easy install of the stealth app, the stealth app shares the same package name as the normal app. Because of this, the FollowMee stealth app might still show up in the installed app list. To fix this problem, go to Google Play, then My Apps, locate FollowMee and uninstall it. Then install this stealth app from the following link.
Download stealth tracker app for Android

Once you have this version of stealth app installed, you open the web browser in this device and login to your account page. There is a link at the bottom to open this stealth app. Once it opens, you can press the start button and proceed with setting up the app. When the app is running, you can dial the secret code to open it.

Q: Why does the tracker app not follow my configured track interval? I set it to 1 minute but the app only wakes up every 5 minutes. [scroll to top]

A: We use an android function to wake up the app according to your track interval. But some devices does not implement this function correctly. For these devices, you need to set the option "Exact Interval" in the app settings. The app will try a different function call, which will use slightly more battery power.

Q: Why I cannot set the track interval smaller than the default? [scroll to top]

A: All editions of the GPS tracker app for Windows Phone, including the paid edition, cannot set the track interval less than 30 minutes for windows phone 8/8.1, or 15 minutes for Windows 10 Mobile. This is limited by the Windows Phone platform. The platform api does not allow the app to wake up more frequent than this interval.

Q: Why this GPS tracker app stops after 2 weeks? [scroll to top]

A: This is another Windows Phone 8 limitation. Background app has to be pinned to the start menu, or added to the lock screen (to show quick or detailed status). Otherwise, the OS will kill the app after 2 weeks. The only workaround for this is to open the app manually at least once every 2 weeks.

Q: When I run this GPS tracker app, the phone repeatedly prompts for security permission [scroll to top]

A: This is a known issue for some of the OS 5.0 devices. This GPS tracker app makes a one-time security permissions request on its startup. However, this request fails in these devices and therefore each time that app needs to do something with the phone, the phone prompts the user for permission. This problem can be fixed by granting all permissions to the app. Go to the phone Options - Applications - FollowMee - Edit Permission. Allow all permissions to the app.

Q: I have enable Call-In function but the phone does not auto answer the phone call. [scroll to top]

A: The app requires input simulation permission for this function but the permission is denied. To grant this permission, go to phone Options - Applications - FollowMee - Edit Permissions. Make sure that Interactions - Input Simulation is allowed. Then pull the battery to reboot the phone.

Q: I have enable Auto Reboot function but the phone does not reboot automatically. It leaves a message box asking to reboot. [scroll to top]

Q: I have enable Stealth Mode but this GPS tracker app still shows up in the application list under device options. [scroll to top]

A: When you install an app to your device, the app name appears in the installed application list in your device. Enable Stealth Mode hides the app icon from the device home screen but does not hide it from the application list. You are required to perform the following steps:

1. Uninstall the app from the phone. This will remove the app from the application list
2. Reboot the phone
3. Install the app from this OTA url - http://www.followmee.com/download/followmee_stealth.jad
4. Open the app by pressing the secret code and press yes if the app asks for permission
5. Make sure that the app is running normally
